How to prevent robbing

Robbing behaviour can be instigated by feeding activities, in particular when several hives are located in close proximity. Attracted by the scent of sugar syrup all bees from the neighborhood are eager to bring some of it home, especially when no nectar can be found elsewhere.

The following measures can be taken to reduce the likelihood of it to happen:

1. Do not invite bees from the neighborhood by feeding out in the open. Always feed inside the hive.

2. Feed late in the afternoon when bees are less inclined to leave their hive to forage.

3. If you have to bring supplemental feeding to the bee yard, keep your sugar syrup tightly sealed and away from the hive.

4. Avoid spilling of sugar syrup.

Some hives have a wide opening as entrance, which is hard to defend against robbing bees or wasps. Reducing the width of the hive entrance to 3-5cm makes it easier for the bees to defend their colony against robbers.
