Honeybee sub-species in Australia

The European Honeybee Apis Mellifera is not native to Australia.

Australia's early European settlers introduced Honey Bees to Australia in the early 1820’s.

Over the years the following subspecies have been introduced to Australia:

Italian – apis mellifera ligustica

Caucasian – apis mellifera caucasia

Carniolan – apis mellifera carnica

European Dark Bee – apis mellifera mellifera

Buckfast Bee – hybrids bred by Brother Adam

The vast majority today is made up by a gene pool of all of the above, hybrids or Mongrels.
