When to open the Hive

Session 4
When to open the Beehive

Opening the Beehive should ideally be done under mild weather conditions -

- when it is not too cold, not too hot and not too windy, when you would enjoy sitting outside in shorts and T-shirt.

Opening the hive between 9am and 4pm offers the advantage that most of the foraging bees are out in the fields, collecting nectar and pollen. This means, less bees in the hive, less crowded combs for inspection and less bees with the potential to sting.

Always have your smoker handy when opening a beehive. Make sure that you have enough of fuel with you, so your smoker will not go out when you need it most.
