Bee Instincts

Collecting nectar, pollen and water - encourage:

Place hive in an early sun position to encourage foraging.
Provide sufficient storage space in the hive.

Provide water supply nearby but not too close, all year, clean and safe.

Controlling hive temperature and humidity - support:

Assist by placing hive in a sheltered position, protecting from wind, rain, dampness, heat.
Place hive in an early sun position to warm up quicker after a cold night.
Provide water supply nearby but not too close, all year, clean and safe.

Protecting the colony against intruders - discourage:

Place hive in a quiet position, e.g. not next to a playground.
Don't position hive close to areas with physical activities.

Growing the colony and multiply - encourage & control:
Encourage growth, a strong colony can better defeat pests and diseases.

Prevent and control swarming, especially in urban areas.

A Beekeeper must control these instincts through good management.
