Composition of a colony
Session 2
Composition of a honeybee colony
A healthy and strong honeybee colony consists of:
- One Queen Bee
- Tens of thousands of Worker Bees (up to 60,000)
- Several hundred Drones during spring and summer, only a dozen or so in winter
- Brood (eggs, larvae, pupae) stored in comb cells
- Combs with food stores (honey, pollen)
None of them could survive on their own.
They can only exist in its entirety, dependent on each other.
A bee colony is therefore regarded as one single unit, a super organism.
