Foundation for guidance
Session 3
Frames for combs
Comb Foundation for guidance
Simply filling the hive with eight wooden frames does not ensure that the bees build the combs to the beekeepers expectations; one comb entirely within the perimeters of one frame.
If left unguided, the bees could build combs at an angle, spanning across several frames, making it impossible to remove the combs for inspection without destruction.
To provide the bees with some guidance where and how to build their combs, a sheet of comb foundation, or at least a starter strip is embedded in the frame. Usually the bees get the idea and embrace the guidance.
