Honeybee sub-species in Australia
The European Honeybee Apis Mellifera is not native to Australia.
Australia's early European settlers introduced Honey Bees to Australia in the early 1820’s.
Over the years the following subspecies have been introduced to Australia:
Italian – apis mellifera ligusticaThe vast majority today is made up by a gene pool of all of the above, hybrids or Mongrels.Caucasian – apis mellifera caucasiaCarniolan – apis mellifera carnicaEuropean Dark Bee – apis mellifera melliferaBuckfast Bee – hybrids bred by Brother Adam
