The Holding Box
Session 4
The Holding Box
Holding Box to store frames during Hive Inspection
During hive inspection, some or all frames need to be temporarily removed from the hive.
Rather than placing the frames on the ground, an empty box with a fitted bottom board is recommended, a so called holding box. If the holding box is not closed at the bottom you might lose the queen, hiding in the grass.
Ideally, the holding box is wider than the hive boxes; i.e. a 10-frame width holding box for an 8-frame width hive.
If no dedicated holding box is available:
- A lid placed upside down on the ground with an empty super on top can serve as a holding box.
- One or two 4 or 5-frame nuc boxes can serve as holding boxes.
